Town of Annapolis Royal

The Town of Annapolis Royal offers an awards program for preservation of heritage buildings and to encourage contemporary construction that shows sympathy to its historic environs. The Building awards increase public awareness of Annapolis Royal housing and property development and are presented to the individuals involved in the selected properties. Special commendation will be given to entrants whose properties have authentic landscaping in keeping with the period of the building.

Awards include an individually designed plaque, an artist-designed certificate and a cash award of $500.00 in each category.

RULES OF ENTRY

The Building awards program is open to all residents of Annapolis Royal, including owners, builders, architects and others involved in the housing industry. any housing project completed before the date of closing of competition is eligible.

To enter, fill out the entry form, and providea written description outlining the reasons for the award nomination, accompanied by colour photographs which illustrate the interior and / or exterior of the project, along with sufficient plans to permit an assessment. Photos should be taken before, during and after th construction. Please include a letter giving permission to the Town of Annapolis Royal to reproduce the photographs for promotional and display purposes.

AWARD CATEGORIES

Category 1 - Modern Construction

Award nominees will be considered on the basis of design that shows sympathy to its enviorns, innovation/excellence, aesthetic appeal, economy, efficiency, materials, constuction and us of Nova Scotia materials.

2006 winner in Category 1 - David Yaciuk

Category 2 - Sympathetic Rnovations or Recyclyng

Consideration is given to excellence in renovation or reuse/recycling of existing housing stock with emphasis on integration within the existing structure and community, rejuvenation of otherwise redundant stock, trend - setting solutions, adaptive reuse of non-residential buildings, attention to detail, cost effectiveness and energy efficiency.

Category 3 - Historical Restoration

This category involves excellence in the renovation of an older or heritage building for housing with emphasis on historical authenticity and compatibility with existing detail, surrounding, and energy efficiency.
