LED Streetlights light up the Streets

On April 8, 2009 a major funding announcement was made through ecoNova Scotia for Clean Air and Climate Change in partnership with Conserve Nova Scotia that made it possible for 1,100 energy-efficient LED streetlights to be installed in the Province of Nova Scotia. Annapolis Royal was lucky enough to be the only town to be completely refitted with the lights. Over a period of 4-5 weeks the existing High-Pressure Sodium lights were removed and the new LED fixtures were installed. On October 14, 2009 Nova Scotia Power completed the street light refit; Annapolis Royal is now the first Town in Canada to be completed refitted with energy-efficient LED street lights.

The Satellite Series LED streetlights manufactured by LED Roadway Lighting in Amherst, Nova Scotia offer a significant reduction in power consumption over High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH) systems. The LED street lights meet International Dark Sky Association requirements with no up-light or light pollution. The LED streetlights also boast a significant reduction in the cost of fixture maintenance with a 20 year total system design life and reduction in greenhouse gas emission, and no mercury or lead is contained in the fixture.

LED streetlights in Annapolis Royal have been on the “wish-list” of Council since 2006. The Town had its only set of traffic lights refitted with LED lights in 2006 through a cost-share program with Conserve Nova Scotia. At that time research began on a program that would bring LED streetlights to Annapolis Royal. In 2008 the Town was put in contact with LED Roadway Lighting and a pilot project was developed that led to the announcement on April 8, 2009.

The Town of Annapolis Royal is now proud to have 131 LED street lights illuminating some of the oldest streets and lanes in Canada.
